It was founded in 1747. It had borders with Lankaran, Garadagh, Tabriz, Maragha khanates and Gilan province. The khanate was divided administratively in Ardabil, Ashagy Mishkin,Yuxaru Mishkin, Arshaq and sometimes Vilgij, Astara and Ujarrud mahals. The khanate was once the vassal of Guba khanate and later of Garabagh khanate. The existence of khanate was ended by Gajars in 1820.
