The State Migration Service of the Republic of Azerbaijan has been established and the its statute  was approved by the decree of  the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated on March 19, 2007 in the field of public policy, management and regulation of migration processes defined by the legislation of the Republic of Azerbaijan. 
The State Migration Service function based on the Constitution of Azerbaijan Republic, laws, presidential decrees and orders, decisions and orders of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Azerbaijan Republic, international treaties joined by Azerbaijan.
Activities of the Migration Services includes analysis of migration processes, forecasting and monitoring, creation of unified information system on migration, the development of international cooperation in the field of migration, issuance of permission for foreign citizens and stateless persons for temporary and permanent residence, granting of immigration status, adoption of decision on the extension of temporary stay in the country foreigners and stateless persons arriving in the Republic of Azerbaijan,  including citizenship, refugee status determination issues, etc.
At the same time it controls deportation of illegal migrants from the territory of the country having research, analysis and inspection related to migrants in the country.
