National Parks
National Parks are the areas of location of natural complexes having the special ecological, historical, aesthetic and other importance and used for nature conservation, educational, scientific, cultural, and other purposes, the areas having the status of environmental protection and scientific research institutions. Prior to the establishment of Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources in the Republic of Azerbaijan National Parks were not available in republic. Since 2003, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources had established Ordubad national park named after academician Hasan Aliyev, Shirvan, Ag Gol parks, in 2004, Hirkan, Altiagac, in 2005 Apsheron, in 2006 Shahdagh, in 2008, Goy gol National Parks. In 2008, the territory of Hirkan National Park had been expanded and made 40358 hectares. In November 25, 2009, by decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan the territory of Ordubad National Park was expanded on account of Shahbuz State Nature Reserve, lands of Shahbuz, Julfa, Ordubad regions and made 42797.4 ha. With the same order the name of the National Park was changed and named as Zangezur National Park named after academician Hasan Aliyev. With decree of Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated July 8, 2010 the area of Shahdag National Park was expanded for 14613.1 hectares, and reached 130508.1 ha.
At present, national parks constitute 3.6% of the country\'s territory.
In addition, the relevant works will be continued in direction of new national parks, the state natural reserves, expanding the territory of the coastal state natural reserve Glzllagaj with establishment of sea boulevard national park. At the same time with the support of the German Federal Government, within the program The Caucasian initiative project of the National Park Samur-Yalama has been developed and began for implementation.
