Balakan region located in the most north-western part of the country is bordered by Georgia in the west.

There are a lot of mountain rivers in the region, the lake near the mountain Katekh. The mountainous northern part has the cold climate and the plain part has a temperate climate. There are many historical and architectural monuments in the region: 18-19 km west of the center of the region the Albanian church of the IX-X centuries,  Peri castle of  XII-XIII century in Gullar  village, Nokho cave on Qubek rock, the monument to the Iron Age, rectangular tower in the village Katekh of XVII century and two ancient temple, etc. 

There are hotels and guest houses for tourists in the region.
