The name of the Shamkir city is related with the same name ancient fortress. It is supposed that Shamkir city was built in V - VI centuries BC.
There are remains of the ancient city Shamkhorqala (XVII century) and the Koroglu fortress (XVII century). Before the revolution there was a settlement of displaced Germans living in the area named Annanfeld. The signs of their residence here - straight streets and the church still remains here.
There is the hotel in the city to accommodate tourists.
